Chemistry Glossary

Corrosion

Corrosion - the reaction of a metal with oxygen in the air, moisture or other substances in the environment

Electrolyte

Electrolyte - a compound which conducts electricity in molten state or aqueous solution and are decomposed by electricity during conduction

Electroplating

Electroplating - an electrical process to plate a very thin layer of metal on iron to prevent rusting

Impressed current cathodic protection

Impressed current cathodic protection  - the supply of electrons to the iron and prevents the formation of iron(II) ions

Rust

Rust - the powdery reddish brown coating which forms when iron corrodes. Its chemical name is hydrated iron(III) oxide(Fe2O3•xH2O)

Rust indicator

Rust indicator - a mixture of potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) and phenolphthalein for observation of rusting

Rusting

Rusting - the corrosion of iron

Sacrificial protection

Sacrificial protection - the more reactive metal ‘sacrifices’ itself to prevent iron from rusting

Stainless steel

Stainless steel - an alloy of iron containing chromium and nickel, which does not corrode easily

Tin-plating

Tin-plating - plating of a thin layer of tin on the surface of metal products to prevent rusting

Zinc-plating

Zinc-plating - plating of zinc on the surface of metal products to prevent rusting
