Chemistry Glossary

Carrier gas

Carrier gas - in gas chromatography, the vaporized sample is swept along the column by a carrier gas, usually nitrogen, helium or argon

Chromatographic column

Chromatographic column - a part of a gas chromatograph which is put inside the oven; the stationary phase particles are coated onto the inside of the column

Dioxin

Dioxin - dioxins are environmentally persistent organic pollutants formed primarily as by-products from the incomplete burning of household and industrial wastes

Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde - with the chemical formula HCHO, a common indoor air pollutant

Gas-liquid chromatography

Gas-liquid chromatography - a chromatographic technique using a gas as the mobile phase and a non-volatile liquid as the stationary phase

Gas-solid chromatography

Gas-solid chromatography - a chromatographic technique using a gas as the mobile phase and a solid as the stationary phase

Injector

Injector - a part of a gas chromatograph where a sample is injected into the column

Retention time

Retention time - the time a component is held on a column under given conditions is characteristic of the component and is called its retention time (symbol: Rt)&

Urea-formaldehyde resin

Urea-formaldehyde resin - these resins are used as adhesives in materials such as particle board, medium-density fibreboard and plywood
